Last week I spent 6 days with a group of 18 amazing students from BYU-Idaho. We attended the world’s largest digital photography conference, Photoshop World. Our group had the honor of earning 4 of the 21 prestigious Guru Finalist Awards! Blake Jackson and Thane Clark, my students and teaching assistants, were finalists in Photo Restoration and Photo Retouching. Andrea Hernandez, a former student who joined us, was the only double finalist this year. She won the coveted GURU AWARD for the Photo Retouching category! In addition to awards ceremonies and portfolio reviews, we attended workshops taught by the best of the best photographers and designers. It was an exhausting, but extremely rewarding week. We did find a few opportunities to take photos. I will start of series of Las Vegas posts with this shot of the famous Las Vegas Welcome Sign.
To achieve this effect, I put my camera on a tripod, then set the shutter speed for two seconds, which gave me just enough time to zoom in the lens during the exposure. I paused a bit longer on the end of the zoom, to let the sign remain slightly still in the middle of the moving lights.
Was this the night you went light painting? I really enjoy the zoom effect. I remember using it for my night and light blog! Great timing and position of the sign… I very much like the camera to be tilted!
Thanks for comment, Danno! We spent about an hour trying different zooming techniques with a slow shutter speed. This was not the same night we went to New York New York to do the light paintings. When we were at the Las Vegas Welcome sign, we had fun watching all kinds of people come and go to have their photo taken in front of the sign. There were awesome limos and camera crews from two local TV stations. It was crazy!
Caryn,
I just watched a devotional you gave at BYU Idaho and would like to talk to you if possible. Can you please contact me?

I’m with Danno, this image turned out great. It just pops so well and it’s not too blurry to the point where you can’t even tell what you’re looking at. I just love how sharp the Las Vegas sign is and then the sign just comes toward you and pops right off the screen. Really turned out beautifully. This trip was so amazing and fun, I already can’t wait for next years trip.
