Exotic flowers in abundance in Bogota’s Paloquemao Market prove Colombia’s place as a key world floral exporter
Colombia is the world’s second largest flower exporter and it is easy to see why when we visited the incredible Paloquemao Market in Bogotá, Colombia. You can find anything from exotic tropicals to fresh, white baby’s breath. Retailers are busy shopping to fill their carts with all the flowers they will need to resale. Others are wandering for fund, since the market is open to everyone. With the assistance of my guide and friend, Jorge, I asked the price of one large bundle of 4 foot Lobster Claw Heliconias and the girl told us it would be $4 US for the entire bunch! One stem in the United States would cost about $20. I enjoyed the market vibe and the Colombian people were very friendly about having their photos taken. It was very different from my experience in the farmer’s market of St. Petersburg, Russia last year at this time. I hope you enjoy perusing the results of my time spend in the flower section of the Paloquemao Market.
