What do you think of these images from my…
2014 BYU-Idaho PHOTOSHOP WORLD TEAM
I am excited to introduce the BYU-Idaho Photoshop World Team for 2014! I am looking forward to escorting this brilliant group of 20 young professional photographers to Las Vegas the first week of September to compete, participate, network and learn from many of the best photographers in the industry at Photoshop World, the world’s largest digital photography conference! These students are working hard in my Comm 397R Photographics Society class. They are preparing their entries for the prestigious GURU AWARDS CONTEST and gathering critique to narrow down their portfolios for the individual review session with an industry professional presenter. Feel free to peruse their websites and leave them a comment or two. CLICK on the image to link to that student’s website.
Which of these images catch your attention and why? Please leave a comment!

Your students work just keeps getting better every time I see it. You’re an awesome professor. 🙂
These are all good images, but these are my favorite:
(1st Fave) #1 by James Taylor. It really captured my attention. The overall uniqueness of the photo is what makes it stand out. The black and white also adds to it.
(2nd Fav) #5 by William Gibbs. The yellows in the skies really add to the image. I love how the tree looks with all that snow and ice on top of it. It really brings out what an Idaho winter is really like. It really made me miss Idaho. This is an image that I would definitely hang up in my living room.
(3rd Fav) #14 by Kenzi Schiess. The sharpness of the rope really caught my attention. It really had that old GhostTown/western feel to it. It would make a lovely print/canvas for a household.
AJ, it is always great to hear from you and I am glad you like the student work here. They are a great bunch and we look forward to carrying on the BYU-Idaho and PSW tradition you were a part of! Good luck to you in all you are doing!
It’s always fun to see the work of students and what they will submit for the Photoshop Guru contest. As a previous winner I wish all those submitting the best of luck! Take the time to put the finishing touches on your work and don’t feel that your work can’t be recognized just because you are a student. It can!
These are all great pieces. I have to agree with AJ, I was drawn to #1 by James Taylor. The piece is fun and draws attention with the contrast and how the birds play into the piece. Nicely done!
My other favorite is #14. I love the shadows with the hands and the focus on the knuckles and the rope. This piece tells a story and makes you want to know more!
#11 by Megan Kelly makes me smile! I love the action in this shot with the blurred effect of the Frisbee. All children wish for a super power and this photo has it all. The determination, the strength and the super power. Who can’t relate to being a superhero and wishing for a place where they prevail. Nicely done Megan!
Good Luck and Enjoy Photoshop World it’s amazing!
Thanks for the comment, Rebecca! I will be adding another blog post when they get their GURU entries ready in mid-July and we would love you opinion about that too. Your winning GURU was a great example for them and it will be nice for them to hear from a former student who landed the big, coveted award!
I love #11! The lighting is so beautiful and the composition is captivating. It captures me with intrigue – I wonder what the story is behind the picture and the emotion in the picture is fabulous. It’s a great photo – everything in it goes together so well!
It is great to hear from you, Elsa! The Superhero image is a great story-telling capture. Thanks for the comment!
I love #1. I love the use of the birds and how they fit perfectly of the body made of trees/branches. The contrast also draws you in.
I also really love #12. I love the movement in the hair and how the yellow of the dress brings you back up to the sun. I like that It’s so raw and emotional.
Thanks for the comment, Linnea! It is fun to see the excellent work from these students.
Hey Sister Esplin! I’m loving everyone’s work but if I had to pick, these are my choices:
1. James Taylor. I like James’ because of uniqueness. It’s almost a mixture between graphic design and photography. The black and white also make a stunning contrast.
2. Shane Price. The lighting in this image is perfect! It’s subtle and beautiful. It’s very timeless.
3. Erica White. Her use of Chiaroscuro here is amazing. She really uses the light to her advantage. I also love the composition.
Thank you for your insightful and detailed feedback. These students really do have some amazing work so it is nice to hear from you.
