COMPOSITION TIP – AVOID TANGENTS: When your subject is close to the horizon line, compose your shot to be sure the subject’s head does not line up with the horizon or background objects. The subject should protrude above or below the line or it is considered a tangent. This is a design term that refers to two objects that are very close or touching and in conflict. To achieve contrast and feature your subject, avoid tangents! In this case, I had to hold my mirrorless camera at a very low angle, leaning it out of the boat almost touching the water (looking through my Sony flip screen) to position the fisherman’s head above the horizon. Without watching this composition tip, you end up with the subject silhouette getting lost in the bridge behind him.
