During the 11th and 12th century, over 10,000 temples were built here by an affluent society as part of their devotion and worship to Buddha. Each structure has one or sometimes hundreds of statues, stone carvings and wall paintings telling stories. Truly a historical and architectural marvel! Finally recognized and protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in July of 2019.
