These portraits were taken by students in my BYU-Idaho Comm 370 Digital Imaging Courses on May 24, 2012 on our photo excursion to Bannack Ghost Town, Montana.
Don’t my students rock?
Check out their work below!
We had 201 entries in our Bannack Shootout Contest. These portraits were taken during a special one hour portrait contest on our excursion to Bannack Ghost Town on May 24. We had over 65 people on the trip and it was a huge success. We selected these 39 finalists from the 201 entries. Link to original 201 entries
While at Bannack Ghost Town, we set up seven stations with special lighting in the Bannack Ghost Town hotel and saloon. This is the first semester we had a group of models come and it made a huge difference. I want to thank my two TA s, Dustin Olsen and Julie Peterson who helped keep everything going smoothly! I am also so grateful to all of our lab assistants who came and donated their time to serve as instructors and group leaders on our excursion to Bannack Ghost Town excursion. I was so impressed with how they all guided everyone during the photo shootout contest, with all our special lighting setups. This was an amazing experience and the epitome of the BYU-Idaho Learning Model in action, with “students teaching students!” The success of this excursion shows in the quality of their contest entries. Thanks to all the students who took the time to enter this extra contest. I promise some great prizes for the TOP TEN winners next Wednesday in class!

Amazing collection of pictures. Manny Quinteros (o) Really jumps out at me there all something for me to aspire too.
Thanks for your vote. Can you also choose your second and third choice too?
I cast my vote for O, by Manny Quintero
Thanks for your vote, Joanne. Can you take a minute and tell me which you like for second and third choice too?
I think these are all amazing. But with reading what was required of them to create these I will have to chose C, T and O. Wish I was there still learning from you! This sounds amazing and a lot better then when I was there.
It is great to hear from you, Kristie! Thanks for reading the post and for studying out your choices.. and for giving me your top 3. Have a great week, my friend. Things have changed a lot. In fact, I will be offering a new Professional Imaging course this fall.. it is all about how to start a new photography business. The marketing, creative fine art projects and actual client portraiture. Plus students will create a self-hosted WordPress website (using a Elegant Themes template) and all kinds of cool plugins including an estore, where they will be required to make a few sales. We are also going on three weekend photo shoots together. It will be a blast! I miss you!

O, n, a. Love the lighting in o but I would tame down the eye effect to match my personal taste. N is a lovely photo and the post processing is good. A is a great capture, but I would love to do a little dodging and burning for my personal style. All very good photos. I’m impressed.
Thanks for stopping by to vote and the critique is great. As you know so well, it is tough to get the right amout of editing without overdoing it. And of course, it is good to hear a variety of opinions, because everyone’s taste varies too.. The quality is higher than the past few semesters, so it is fun to see the progress in this course. Thanks again for taking the time, and thanks for posting the HDR portrait composite contest on your amazing http://www.improvephotography.com facebook page! It is always great to hear from you, Jim.
(C) Is very Impressive too so hard to make it my second choice ( I would never make a good judge I love them all), and KL would be my third choice.
Chris Rafferty
Thanks again, Chris!
My votes are 1. L 2. O 3. N. Just from a nonprofessionals viewpoint. 🙂

Awesome work! My votes are: Q, N, and AB.
Thanks for stopping by to vote, Jason! It’s great to hear from you. 🙂
Love the color in S, the angle and contrast in AB, C is just awesome (Zoe is so beautiful), and I love Z, too. They’re all very impressive! It’s amazing what a day in Bannack can do for a photographer 🙂
Thanks for voting, Sarah! It is always nice to hear from you. 🙂 I have your Bananck framed poster print right outside my office right now, so I think of you and your awesome talent often. I hope all is well?
I vote for L, D, and AB
Thanks for voting, Ray!
1. T by Lauren Walker, innovative and creative shot, love the angle, she thought outside of the box
2. O by Manny Quintenero, great execution in retouching it to black and white, nice retouching for the eyes.
3. N by Katie Bowns, love the desaturated and cool hues retouching. She made the subject fit the time period
I applaude all of you! (And you too Caryn!)
I appreciate you stopping by the blog to vote, Andrea 🙂 Good luck with your portrait composite. I can’t’ wait to one of your portraits in one of my HDRS!
My vote is for V. The ghosting technique and the color used in the portrait for the face and hat really fit the theme of the ghost town feel. The rest of the portraits are amazing. Lots of talent shown here along with evidence of a great teacher.
Thanks for the compliment, Tim! Could you also tell us your second and third favorites too?
My second choice would be P and third choice W. I like the contrast and setting of the subjects in these two.
Loved O, R and X. Great pictures. keep up the good work.
Thanks for voting, Jeremiah!
They are all amazing, but my top pics for the contest are: O, AB and ST
Thanks for stopping by to vote, Manny 🙂
I vote for the following: 1:O, 2:B and 3:Y. The way the people were captured was very artistic and clever. Manny’s picture looks straight out of a fashion magazine, Katie’s reminds me of some kind of dvd cover and Lauren’s photo would work perfect on a poster.
Hello Amy Grant. Are you the famous singer? 🙂
Either way thanks for the comment and votes!
What a marvelous experience to give your students, and it surely is apparent they “excelled” in capturing the images in such a way as authentic feeling and exposure. Well done by all these photographers. My choice
is images M, P, and QR-loved the feeling, editing and angle of these photos.
Why thank you, Jan, and thanks for taking the time to vote!
My vote goes to O, E, and ST.
Thanks for voting, Gerardo. Have a great day!
These are all so great. It’s REALLY hard to pick, but here goes. I liked O by Manny Quintero. It really captured an intensity in the models eyes. The contrast and focal point were striking. I liked (L) by Brad Sant. It was just totally adorable. His eyes, his pose, the angle…the sepia was perfect. I also liked (V). It looked like a book cover for a story of a girl who had come back to her home as a ghost looking to right some wrong. It was really cool the effect of the building coming through her image and it had a very ethereal feel.
Thanks for you votes, Tirzah and for your insightful comments. I also appreciate your help in making this happen!
I really like manny quintero (o)
Thanks for voting, but could you also tell us your second and third favorites too?
I vote for O, EF and AB.
Thanks for the votes!
These are all great. My votes are for L, AB, and S. Well done everyone.
I am glad you like the students’ work. Thanks for taking the time to vote.:)
P, Y and QR
Thanks for voting, Trina!
My votes are P, L, and KL
Thanks for stopping by to vote. 🙂
Katie Anderson! When I saw her photos my printer turned itself on, loaded itself with paper, and started using all of my ink…
QR, B, M, and P!!!
Haha.. LOL, I am so glad you love Katie’s work, but please remember she owns the images, so please be sure and get permission before printing 😉 I assume you were just using that statement to make a point, so no worries.
Thanks for voting!
That is an excellent point that you make! I’ve always known that my printer was delinquent in multitudinous ways, but this is the clincher. I cannot go on living my life with this electronic fiend, completely devoid of any knowledge of copyright law. Katie, I’ve shredded the photos, burnt the shreds, and spread the ashes across the 6 main habitable continents. I now relinquish the punishment of my printer into your hands, and the injunction of the highest court of gadgetry in the land: The Best Buy Geek Squad. They will know precisely which sentence to justly pass. Good luck everybody! 🙂
LOL!
I vote for U, H, and AB!!!!
All these images should be printed and placed on exhibit somewhere. My top pics are O, W and K. Let us know who wins.
Thanks for the comment. Actually these students and more are currently displaying their framed large format poster prints (24×36″) in the BYU-Idaho Spori foyer. Each student chose their best image from the semester to frame and display, so only a few of these portraits ended up in the final mix… but the showing is amazing! Next week, the other half will be on display. I have two sections of Comm 300 Digital Imaging, which is about 50 students. Thanks again for your input!
These are all do good! My favorites are L, AB and H.
